When 55-year-old Marie Fricker complained of a burning hot foot, chills, and a pins-and-needles feeling crawling up her leg, nobody paid much attention. Marie was a lifelong hypochondriac and frequently predicted her own doom from perceived maladies ranging from cholera to the common cold. As far as her friends and family were concerned, this was just one more. It wasn’t. Three weeks after the birth of her first grandchild, Marie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. She was treated with chemotherapy and went into remission but was given only a 20 percent chance of surviving five years without a recurrence. Eight years later, the author tells her story of fear, perseverance, and hope with a wry humor that sheds light into the dark abyss of battling a catastrophic disease. You will laugh and cry with her and benefit from her Top 15 List of practical strategies for coping with cancer.

All in My Head How a Hypochondriac Beat Brain Cancer Marie Fricker 9780997567014 Books

For the sake of full disclosure, I must admit that I know Marie Fricker personally, but that has in no way affected my review of this book! I grew up next door to the Fricker family and Marie's children were my best childhood friends. I have always known that Marie is a writer, a hypochondriac, and a hysterically funny pessimist among other things, but I never realized how incredibly talented she is! She pulls no punches in this memoir detailing the rollercoaster ride of her battle with a rare form of brain cancer. Friends, family, and even doctors doubted the severity of her mystery illness causing an agonizing delay in her diagnosis. Throughout her ordeal she learned who her true friends are and the importance of becoming her own advocate. She encountered medical staff ranging from heartless drones to absolute angels seemingly sent from heaven just for her. Marie's story is terrifying, heartbreaking, funny and uplifting all at once. It offers hope and courage not only to those facing life-threatening and debilitating illnesses, but also to their loved ones who must stand helplessly by, grappling with their own mixed emotions. It celebrates the strength of the human spirit and the will to fight, if not for yourself, than for those who depend on you. Cancer is a disease that leaves few of us unscathed. Whether you are waging your own battle, caring for a loved one, or simply want a brutally honest picture of how this illness engulfs the lives of everyone it touches, this is a must read!

All in My Head How a Hypochondriac Beat Brain Cancer Marie Fricker 9780997567014 Books Reviews

Everything else got in the way while I was reading this book. I read at 5 a.m. and at midnight because I had such trouble putting this book down. Marie Fricker is a talented writer who shared her journey in an exceptional manner. She let the world in to see her darkest moments and her celebrations. I laughed and I cried. I was sad and I was inspired. I learned a lot from her journey and would highly recommend this book. I LOVED IT!
A woman and her ordeal, at once heart wrenching and inspirational. Marie writes in a candid and authentic manner. She offers an accounting of a story which so affects everyone in her orbit; her family, her friends, her co-workers and leaves no part of the experience untold. Her short but pithy chapters are anecdotal, and she somehow manages to bring humor into an experience which allows both her and the reader to carry on. Thank you, Marie, for sharing your story. What a wonderfully meaningful way to personally reflect on your ordeal and share the emotional roller coaster with you audience. Well done!

I just finished reading Ms. Fricker’s book . I laughed and cried as I read her story. I even felt her pain at times.
What an incredible woman she is. She is giving hope for survival for some brain tumor patients through her story. An amazing woman who kept her humor through all her treatments. I believe that her family, friends, co workers and God gave her the strength to go through what she did and she is an inspiration for others. It is a must read book .
As a PCNSL Sister Warrior I was excited to read this book. It was candid and took me through her journey in a personal way. Thank you Marie for sharing your story and giving others a look at how facing a devastating cancer diagnosis can lead to healing.
All In My Head is a wonderful book that I highly recommend. Marie Fricker is a talented writer and she captured my attention from the very first page. I did not want to put this book down! One moment I was sad, another angry, and later hopeful. And at times, she made me laugh out loud! I thank this author for sharing her story and allowing her readers to step into her world to experience her journey and all the ups and downs of what it means to be a cancer survivor. This book is a great read. I’ll be the first in line for her next book!
With wit and candor, Marie takes the reader on a journey I wish no one would need to travel. I picked up this book a bit reluctantly and afraid of what I might read, but I so enjoyed reading All in My Head; I couldn't put it down and finished it in 5 hours. It is accessible with short chapters for people who may struggle to read for very long periods (Hello brain cancer patients). It is winsome, funny, informative, inspirational and poignant. I ordered the book and recommended that our family members do the same. As the daughter of one diagnosed with the same brain cancer, I wanted to provide my mom with encouragement, information, and support. Marie tells cancer patients, "your life's not over, but you have to fight for it." I appreciate Marie's story, her pragmatic tips, and her willingness to share her perspective authentically. It's a great read for anyone facing a cancer diagnosis.
I bought this book for my wife Carol because she recently lost her brother who had brain cancer. She told me that it really helped her as she has other members of her family that are dealing with cancer. Marie gave her hope in dealing what her other brother, her sister and her sisters two daughters are going through. There is so much cancer in her family. Carol loved how Marie told stories about her past and her children and what they dealt with what she was going through. My wife and I agree that this is a book that should be on the best sellers list. We also believe that she has a great future as a writer . Carol is right beside me as I write this, in fact these are her words and I agree with her 100%.
